Hello.
This is Dr. Yumin Lee from MeSOnBOM Clinic.

Many people searching for Hongdae pigmentation treatment wonder how many Pico Toning sessions they may need for concerns such as melasma and dark spots.

One of the most common questions I hear is, “Will my melasma improve after 10 Pico Toning sessions?”

Pico Toning requires an individualized treatment plan based on pigmentation type, depth, skin condition, and treatment response, meaning there is no fixed number of sessions that applies to every patient.

Even when melasma or dark spots look similar on the surface, the underlying skin condition may differ. For this reason, ongoing evaluation of treatment response is more important than focusing on a predetermined number of sessions.

Q. How Does Pico Toning Target Pigmentation?

Pico Toning uses ultra-short picosecond laser pulses to target melanin pigment in the skin.

A picosecond is one trillionth of a second. By delivering energy within this extremely short pulse duration, picosecond lasers can produce a photoacoustic effect that targets pigment particles.

A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis published in Lasers in Medical Science analyzed six randomized controlled trials. The study found reductions in melasma severity scores with picosecond laser treatment, although outcomes varied according to factors such as wavelength. [Reference ①]

This means that when considering Hongdae pigmentation treatment, not every type of pigmentation should be treated in exactly the same way.

Freckles and some sun spots are generally more superficial, while melasma may involve changes extending beyond epidermal pigmentation, including alterations in the dermal environment.

Pigmentation TypeCharacteristicsTreatment Approach
Freckles & some sun spotsGenerally more superficialDirect pigment-targeting treatment may be considered
MelasmaMay involve epidermal and dermal changesRepeated treatment and long-term management may be considered
Deeper pigmentationPigment located deeper within the skinTreatment may require a longer-term approach depending on the condition

Q. Will 10 Pico Toning Sessions Improve Melasma?

Melasma treatment outcomes cannot be determined by the number “10” alone, as clinical protocols vary in session counts and treatment intervals while individual responses differ.

For example, a 2022 prospective split-face study involving 20 Korean patients with facial melasma compared a 1,064-nm picosecond Nd laser with a conventional 1,064-nm Q-switched Nd laser.

Each side of the face was treated five times at two-week intervals. Both treatments resulted in significant clinical improvement and decreased modified Melasma Area and Severity Index (mMASI) scores compared with baseline. However, no statistically significant difference in mMASI was found between the two laser techniques. [Reference ②]

Importantly, this five-session protocol represents a specific clinical study design rather than a standard prescription for every patient.

In clinical practice, the appropriate number and interval of treatments may vary according to pigmentation type, skin condition, laser settings, and individual response.

Therefore, when considering Hongdae pigmentation treatment, it is more important to evaluate how the pigmentation responds over time than simply counting the number of Pico Toning sessions.

Q. Why Can Melasma Treatment Take a Long Time?

Melasma treatment can take time because the condition involves complex changes in the skin microenvironment rather than simply excess melanin at the skin surface.

A 2025 review published in the International Journal of Dermatology reported changes associated with melasma, including skin barrier dysfunction, basement membrane damage, solar elastosis, vascular changes, and alterations in dermal fibroblasts. [Reference ③]

As a result, long-standing melasma or pigmentation involving deeper structures may not show rapid visible improvement after only a few Pico Toning sessions.

Depending on the skin condition and treatment response, other treatment approaches may also be considered rather than repeatedly performing Pico Toning alone.

In other words, “10 Pico Toning sessions = completed melasma treatment” is not a reliable formula.

Hongdae pigmentation treatment should instead be planned by assessing the type and depth of pigmentation, overall skin condition, and response to previous treatments.

Q. How Should I Care for My Skin After Pico Toning?

After Pico Toning, consistent daily sun protection and moisturization are important, particularly because melasma has a tendency to recur.

An international Delphi consensus developed by experts from the Pigmentary Disorders Society identified photoprotection with broad-spectrum sunscreen as an essential part of melasma management. [Reference ④]

After treatment, use sunscreen consistently when outdoors. For prolonged outdoor exposure, physical protection such as a hat or parasol may also be helpful.

If redness or sensitivity occurs after Pico Toning, temporarily avoiding saunas, hot baths, intense exercise, and other activities that expose the skin to excessive heat may also be advisable.

Keeping the skin adequately moisturized can help support the skin during the recovery period. If minor flaking or crusting occurs, avoid picking, scrubbing, or forcibly removing it.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q. Can I see results after only one or two Pico Toning sessions?
Some pigmentation may show visible changes, but one or two sessions may not be enough to determine the overall treatment response of a chronic condition such as melasma.

Q. How often should Pico Toning be performed?
There is no single treatment interval suitable for everyone. The interval should be determined according to the type of pigmentation, skin condition, laser parameters, and the skin's response after treatment.

Q. Does long-term Pico Toning make the skin thinner?
Repeated Pico Toning does not necessarily make the skin thinner. However, excessive energy or inappropriate repeated treatment may increase the risk of skin irritation or pigmentary changes, so treatment should be adjusted according to the skin's response.

When treating melasma, the key question is not simply “How many sessions do I need?” but “What type of pigmentation do I have, and how is it responding to treatment?”

Even when pigmentation appears similar, its depth, underlying skin condition, and response to treatment may differ from person to person.

Therefore, if you are considering Hongdae pigmentation treatment, rather than focusing only on the number of Pico Toning sessions, it is important to first assess the type and depth of pigmentation and the overall condition of the skin before establishing an individualized treatment plan.

Thank you.
